
Ikot Ukpong Iman Takes Bold Step for a Greener Future with UNDP GEF-SGP Supported Project Launch
On July 30, 2025, the community of Ikot Ukpong Iman, Akwa Ibom State, marked a historic milestone with the official launch of the UNDP GEF-SGP-supported project: “Application of Nature-Based Solutions for Sustainable Forest Restoration and Livelihoods’ Resilience.”

The event, organized by the Prime Initiative for Green Development (PIGD), brought together indigenous leaders, chiefs, government officials, environmental experts, and community members to champion a shared vision of environmental sustainability.

In the days preceding the launch, excitement swept through Akwa Ibom State as PIGD amplified awareness with a radio session on Comfort 95.1 FM Uyo and vibrant community-focused jingles.

Community members arrived early, proudly receiving branded shirts to symbolize their commitment. The program began with an opening prayer and a heartfelt welcome from the Obong of Ikot Ukpong Iman, who urged residents to embrace and take ownership of the project for long-term benefits.

Keynote speeches underscored the event’s significance. Ruth Akagu, UNDP-GEF SGP Representative, highlighted the transformative power of grassroots collaboration. Hon. Uko Umoh, representing Etinan LGA, pledged full support, envisioning the project as a model for other communities.
Expert presentations deepened the discourse:
- Prof. Ekanem Ekanem explained the role of nature-based solutions in climate change adaptation.
- Prof. Gabriel Umoh outlined the economic and ecological value of agroforestry.
- A representative from the Akwa Ibom State Department of Agriculture and Rural Development emphasized the potential of climate-smart agriculture to boost rural economies.
Dr. Akpan Archibong, the project coordinator, unveiled a nine-month roadmap focused on community-led regeneration, capacity-building, and sustainable livelihoods.


Youth leaders pledged their active participation, reflecting the project’s potential to inspire the next generation. The launch concluded with group photographs and refreshments prepared by the community’s women a fitting celebration of unity, culture, and hope.
With this initiative, Ikot Ukpong Iman is not just planting trees it is sowing the seeds of resilience, sustainability, and prosperity for generations to come.
